Why We Did Not Power It On
With severe water damage, plugging in a charger can make the damage worse.
Even if a MacBook looks dry from the outside, water can remain under the logic board, inside connectors, under chips and around the touchpad area.
Powering on too early can burn components and make data recovery harder.
So we started with:
- opening the MacBook;
- removing the logic board;
- ultrasonic cleaning;
- checking for corrosion;
- replacing damaged small components;
- testing power rails safely.
What We Found
After cleaning the board, we replaced 19 corroded resistors and capacitors.
The MacBook still did not power on normally. The USB-C reading was:
5V / 0AWe then found the main power rail was too low:
PPBUS_AON = 1.2VAfter detailed charging-circuit diagnosis, we found a small faulty resistor, R5275, was preventing the charging circuit from working properly.
After replacing R5275, the main power rail returned to normal.
Why We Did Not Replace Chips Blindly
In water-damaged MacBooks, it is easy to assume the biggest nearby chip is faulty.
But board repair should not be guesswork.
In this case, the charging chip needed several smaller support signals and power lines before it could work properly. One of those required lines was missing because R5275 was open.
If we had replaced the charging chip first without checking the required conditions, the MacBook still would not have worked.
This is why proper measurement saves time, cost and risk.
Data Recovery Achieved
After further repair, the board started booting. But when we connected the touchpad, the main power rail dropped to 0V.
The touchpad was water damaged and shorting the MacBook. We replaced the touchpad, and the MacBook booted into macOS.
We then completed the Time Machine backup.
At that point, the customer’s first goal was achieved:
Data saved
Additional Faults Fixed
After the data was saved, we continued the functional repair.
We also repaired:
- battery detection and charging;
- right-side speaker sound;
- water-damaged audio amplifier section.
The final bill included:
Logic board repair
Touchpad replacement
Data intactThe customer had the option to pay for data recovery only, or continue with the full MacBook repair.
Important Lesson: Do Not Shake the MacBook After Liquid Damage
This MacBook had no visible water marks in the screen, even though it was submerged.
That is not always what happens.
When a bottle leaks inside a school bag or backpack, the MacBook is often shaken while liquid is inside. That movement can force liquid into the screen film layers. In many of those cases, the screen develops water marks and needs replacement.
A replacement screen can cost a large part of the MacBook’s value.
Best action after a spill:
Turn it off
Do not charge it
Do not shake it
Do not keep opening and closing it
