Water-Damaged M4 MacBook Air Chimed but Had a Black Screen - Fixed

This 2025 M4 MacBook Air still chimed after a water spill, but its screen remained black. With no A3240 schematic available, we traced a donor board, rebuilt the missing backlight supply connection and restored full operation.

A Melbourne CBD customer found IT-Tech Online through ChatGPT after water was spilled on a 13-inch 2025 M4 MacBook Air. The Mac still produced a startup chime, but the screen stayed black. That combination is important: it suggests the computer may still be booting even though the display has no usable backlight.
This Mac was model A3240 with logic board 820-03597. It is one of the newest MacBook Air models, so detailed third-party repair information is limited. Apple also changed the backlight circuit from the previous A3113 model, which meant the older schematic could not be followed connection for connection.
The USB-C current showed that the Mac was booting
Our first USB-C test negotiated 20 V and showed a current sequence of approximately 0.10 A, 0.25 A, 0.45 A and then 0.23 A. Together with the startup chime, this was consistent with normal boot activity.
That finding changed the direction of the diagnosis. Instead of treating the Mac as a no-power machine, we concentrated on the internal display and backlight power circuit. A black screen after liquid damage can be caused by the screen, its cable, a control signal or a board-level backlight fault. Replacing the display without finding the cause can be expensive and may not solve the problem.
Why the previous-model schematic was not enough
The A3113 MacBook Air schematic provided a useful picture of how the earlier backlight section worked. However, testing showed that the A3240 board used a different, simplified arrangement. On a high-energy power rail, assuming that two generations are wired the same is unsafe.
We therefore used an A3240 donor logic board as a physical reference. Several backlight components had to be removed from the donor board so the hidden pad connections could be traced. This work turned the donor board into a practical boardview and revealed the correct supply path for the new design.
Why a donor board matters When a current schematic is unavailable, a known matching board allows a technician to verify where each pad actually goes. That evidence is far safer than guessing from a similar but older model. |
The missing backlight supply connection
The key discovery was a 0-ohm link in the A3240 backlight circuit. One side connected to the backlight controller’s input pins; the other side was meant to receive PPBUS_AON, a main always-on bus supply. On the liquid-damaged board, the supply-side pad or trace was missing or open.
We installed a fine jumper wire between the correct PPBUS_AON point and the 0-ohm link. This did not force the screen to remain bright or bypass brightness control. It simply restored the original supply route into the backlight controller. The backlight immediately returned and continued to respond normally to macOS brightness commands.
Fully tested before return
After the repair, the M4 MacBook Air was tested through the conditions that commonly expose an incomplete backlight repair. Brightness adjustment worked across its range, sleep and wake worked normally, lid closing and reopening were reliable, and the Mac operated correctly from both its charger and battery.
It was also operated at maximum brightness for 20-30 minutes. The backlight remained stable, the image was bright and even, and the Mac was fully functional. Repairing the original logic board also meant the customer’s existing data and installation remained intact.
No schematic makes the repair harder - not impossible
With a complete A3240 schematic, this job would probably have taken about two hours. Because the circuit had been revised and documentation was unavailable, one full day was needed to dismantle and trace the donor board, compare it with the A3113 design and confirm the safe repair point.
The additional time was spent establishing evidence, not experimenting on the customer’s Mac. For a new model, that distinction matters. Careful reverse engineering can make an original-board repair possible even when standard repair information has not yet reached the independent repair industry.
Does a chiming MacBook with a black screen need a new display?
Not necessarily. A damaged display assembly is one possibility, but the same symptom can come from missing panel power, a failed backlight enable signal, damaged backlight output components or an interrupted logic-board supply. The correct repair starts with electrical diagnosis rather than automatic parts replacement.
What to do after spilling water on a MacBook
Disconnect the charger and stop repeatedly trying to switch the Mac on. Water and conductive residue can continue damaging powered circuits even after the outside looks dry. Do not rely on rice or extended air drying to remove contamination from the logic board. Arrange an internal inspection as soon as practical, especially when the Mac chimes, charges or shows other signs of life but the screen remains black.
