16-Inch MacBook Pro Data Recovery After Failed AMD GPU

Fault Description

This 16-inch MacBook Pro 2019 came from the Berwick / Harkaway VIC 3806 area after it suddenly died.

The customer had already taken it to another repair shop and was told:

The MacBook is not repairable
The data is gone

When we tested it, the USB-C meter showed:

5V / 0A

That meant the MacBook was not starting at all.

What We Found

This MacBook had a short on the main power rail.

The short was caused by the AMD dedicated graphics section and its video RAM power rails. Once those faulty rails were isolated, the main power rail returned.

That meant the original board was not completely dead. The failed dedicated graphics section was stopping the whole MacBook from powering on.

What Is Dedicated GPU Disable Repair?

Some Intel MacBook Pro models have both Intel graphics and a dedicated AMD GPU.

When the AMD GPU or its video RAM fails badly, it can short the power rail and stop the whole MacBook from turning on.

In selected cases, we can disable the faulty AMD GPU section and force the MacBook to run from Intel graphics instead.

This is not the same as replacing the AMD GPU. It is a practical repair option when the priority is:

recovering data;
avoiding full board replacement;
restoring a usable MacBook;
keeping the repair cost lower where possible.

After the repair:

full hardware backlight was restored;
data was accessible;
the system ran cooler;
battery runtime improved because the AMD GPU was no longer running.

The customer was told the data was gone, but the MacBook was recovered and made usable again.
