Machine Model: 17” MacBook Pro A1297 Year 2011

Fault Descriptions: Grey screen with vertical lines, cannot log in most of time.

Investigation: AMD GPU failing, but not completely dead yet

Solution: Remove all AMD GPU functions and connect the screen direct to internal Intel graphics chip.

Result:

  1. No software including Photoshop are affected by the removal of AMD GPU.
  2. MacBook is running 15 °C cooler than before. GPU overheating problem fixed forever.
  3. Battery lasts about 10% longer than before.
